LIST OF DISEASES OF ECONOMIC PLANTS & COMMON NAMES OF DISEASES The following principles, some of which have been adopted by the American Phytopathological Society,2 have been used in select- ing the common names in the present list. Many of these names have already been passed upon and approved by the society. (1) First consideration has been given to names already in wide and general use. (2) Names descriptive of symptoms have been selected where practicable. (3) In general, the various diseases caused by a single organism on different hosts have been given the same common name. (4) Many diseases which are not sufficiently well known or important to re- ceive a descriptive name have been classed according to their major symptoms; for example, leaf-blight, root-rot, rust, and wilt. (5) It is assumed that the generic name of the causal organism may be pre- fixed to such common names whenever it is deemed desirable. Such generic names have not, however, been repeated in this list.

DISTRIBUTION An endeavor has been made to give in a brief form the geographic range of each species as correctly as the available information will permit. Diseases reported from a few or widely scattered States are followed by lists of these States. Diseases which have been re- ported from a number of States in which the host crop is grown or grows naturally are indicated as "general." Diseases which have been reported from a large number of States and in different parts of the country are indicated as "widespread." If a disease occurs 2 Shear, C. L.
