| Description |
Chauvigny (Vienne) Église Saint-Pierre. Chapiteaux peints du déambulatoire (XIIIe siècle). Rond-point du choeur. Troisième colonne (à gauche) : sirènes-oiseaux. Au Moyen-Âge, les sirènes sont symboles de la luxure et de la lubricité. L'oiseau est quant à lui plutôt un symbole positif; il est plus près du Ciel. Quatrième colonne (à droite) : lion ailé à tête humaine et queue terminée par une main. Dans le bestiaire chrétien, le lion est un animal positif, c'est un symbole de vigilance et de sagesse. Le lion ailé est le symbole de l'évangéliste Marc. Au Moyen-Âge on le plaçait à la porte des églises comme gardien. On disait que le lion effaçait ses traces avec sa queue, ici la queue prolongée par une main semble chasser la tentation qui grimace. Mais aussi, dans l'art chrétien, le sphinx, corps de lion et tête humaine, par sa double nature humaine et animale était symbole indissociable du bien et du mal. |
