Origin and age of photograph
[edit]This photo-portrait of Ellen Nussey has long been mistaken for one of her friend Charlotte Brontë. The photo was a copy made c1918 by the photographer, Sir Emery Walker, from the carte de visite photo which was then (c1918) privately owned.[1][2]
Please find below all the elements we have been able to collect on what is known of this photograph, on the basis of its publication, page 55, in the illustrated booklet of the Brontë Parsonage Museum, Sixty Treasures, 1988, Written and Compiled by Juliet R V Barker, Librarian Curator of the Brontë Parsonage Museum. Comments of photograph are as follows (summary in French. See also reference in English at bottom) :
- un négatif sur verre a été trouvé en 1984 à la National Portrait Gallery, réalisé par le célèbre photographe londonien Emery Walker. Le catalogue identifie la photo comme étant celle de Charlotte mais il n'existe aucune preuve physique sinon la ressemblance pouvant exister avec le portrait de Richmond.
- en 1986, la Brontë Society reçut un legs de Mrs Seton Gordon, petite-fille de George Smith, l'éditeur de Charlotte. Elle disait que son grand-père, désireux de réunir des Memorabilia des auteurs qu'il avait publiés, avait accumulé des lettres, des dessins et des manuscrits. Oubliée parmi cette collection se trouvait une petite photo-carte de visite en sépia avec, au dos, la mention "Within a year of CB's death et accompagnée d'une lettre d'Emery Walker datée du 2 janvier 1918, ce qui montrait clairement qu'il s'agisait de l'original du négatif sur verre qui se trouve à la NPG.
- La photo aurait été prise en 1854 pendant la lune de miel des nouveaux mariés. Comme il existe beaucoup de photo de Mr Nicholls en pied ou en vignette, datant de cette période, il semble peu vraisemblable qu'on n'en ait pas prise de Charlotte en même temps. D'où la conclusion qu'il s'agirait d'une vignette (découpage) extraite d'un "full length portrait".
- On se demande pourquoi cette photo serait restée si longtemps cachée ou oubliée et on met cela sur le compte du peu de cas que faisait CB de son aspect physique. Elle aurait préféré se cacher sous les traits du portrait plus avantageux de Richmond que Mrs Gaskell, en 1860, utilisa pour le frontispice de sa biographie.
