Français : Charlet N.T. attr. - Graphite - Vieil officier - 26.5x19.8cm; ce dessin est à rapprocher de la lithographie de Charlet parue dans L’artiste en 1830 (lithographe Lemercier), N° 465 du catalogue de La Combe, avec la légende suivante : « Je puis mourir maintenant, j’ai revu mon vieux drapeau ». La lettre « C . » au dessous du pied du militaire est à rapprocher des signatures de Charlet dans quelques lithographies parues chez Delpech entre 1818 et 1819 (le point après le C confirme le fait qu’il s’agit d’une initiale), toutes assez rares et ayant eu peu de succès à l’époque ; le dessin du visage, caricatural à l’excès, semble aussi assez proche de certains visages des lithographies de cette période. L’intention étant de montrer a priori un vieux républicain (si l’on se fie à la légende de la lithographie) on pourrait rapprocher en « pendant » une autre lithographie, parue chez Delpech en 1818/19 avec la légende « Ils s’en vont !! » représentant un vieux royaliste, ces deux militaires ayant pu s’affronter lors d’une des guerres de Vendée (expliquant le titre proposé anciennement "Vieux Vendéen"). Delpech dans ces mêmes années vendait également des dessins de Charlet ; on peut imaginer que celui-ci étant resté invendu fut réutilisé plus tard et donné au journal « L’artiste », avec la variante du drapeau en complément pour illustrer la légende. Inversement, la probabilité qu’il s’agisse d’une copie d’époque d’après la lithographie semble assez faible : le copiste aurait du connaître cette signature rare et discrète de Charlet (« C . »), il aurait probablement recopié le drapeau, thème fondamental lié à la légende, surtout si on prend en compte le soin apporté à la copie par ailleurs. Enfin accessoirement, le trait est tout à fait compatible avec la manière de Charlet, comme le sont les griffonnements en bas à gauche du dessin. |
