My dear Sir,
From all that I hear Mr. Lippitt of California deserves at least a majorite, & I was glad that the Secretary last evening joined so com- [p. 2] pletely in our desires. It only remains, I think, that you should propose him.
Of course my recommendation is of little consequence; but I make it, sincerely believing that the ap- [p. 3] pointment will be well-bestowed, & most cordially trusting that it will meet with no impediment.
