Bishop C. S. Burch Dies Suddenly In New York. Death Comes To Noted Prelate. Noted Prelate Stricken in Nurse's Apartment After Receiving Treatment For Throat Trouble. Expect Funeral To Be Held On Friday. New York City; December 2-, 1920. Charles Sumner Burch, bishop of the New York Diocese of the Protestant Episcopal Church, died suddenly here today. He had been suffering from laryngitis for the past week. This morning he was somewhat improved and started to take a short walk along Riverside Drive. Near 127th street Bishop Burch felt himself weakening from the effects of his walk and made his way to the apartment of Mrs. Crawford Douglas. She said she had been administering throat treatments to the bishop for the last twelve days and had treated him similarly a year ago last July. Mrs. Douglas also nursed the bishop when he was ill last year. After the treatment today Mrs. Douglas said Bishop Burch told her he felt better, but a trifle weak from his walk. They had talked about fifteen minutes, she added, when the bishop arose from his chair and fell to the floor. Physicians were hurriedly summoned, but the prelate died before they arrived. Death was declared to be due to heart failure. the twelve days' illness of laryngitis having considerably weakened his heart. The bishop's body was removed to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. A standing committee of the diocese, which will take charge of the Episcopate is until the successor to Bishop elected will meet tomorrow. It is expected that arrangements will be made the election of the new bishop shortly after the funeral of Bishop Burch, which has been tentatively set for Friday.
