Title
English: Charles Porter III, Chief Historian, NPS to Kitteridge Wing, Supt., GNMP, June 18, 1963.
Description
English:

Handwritten letter, black text on white paper.

6 / 18 / 63 Mr. Wing The brigade split in its attack – the 4th and 5th Texas going to the right and over Round Top to Little Round Top, the 1st Texas and 3d Arkansas attacking near Devil’s Den. After the fighting on July 2d they went into position south, not east, of Devils Den. The 597 casualties included 142 of the 3d Arkansas. This should be made clear. I suggest therefore that the text be changed to indicate the effort at Devils Den and that there be clarification regarding the participation of the 3d Arkansas earlier in the text. I urge too that the listing of commanders conform to those in the Official Records. This listing does not include Lt. Col. B. F. Carter of the 4th Texas. It does include the name of Lieutenant Colonel R. S. Taylor who commanded the 3d Arkansas after Colonel Manning was wounded. It is probable that Colonel Carter of the 4th Texas was wounded before Colonel Key was wounded and did not command the regiment.
