On 15 May 1920, Charles Mackay's 11 year spell as Whanganui mayor was brought to an abrupt end after he shot poet Richard D'Arcy Cresswell. According to nzhistory.net.nz, "Cresswell claimed that Mackay (who’d previously sought 'treatment' for homosexuality) had made sexual advances, then panicked when faced with the prospect of public exposure. But Cresswell, later known to be a homosexual himself, may not have been an entirely innocent party. Following the shooting, there was widespread speculation that he had been enlisted by others to blackmail the mayor into resigning. This has never been proven." Regardless of the cause, Mackay was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for attempted murder (Cresswell had escaped with minor injuries). This image is from the New Zealand Police Gazette of 1920. The Gazettes were distributed from 1861-1990 to police stations throughout the country, and are indexed.
