Français : Charles Lindbergh à Québec, 1928

« En 1928, l'aviateur américain Charles Lindberg est venu à Québec livrer un sérum spécial pour son ami Floyd Bennett, hospitalisé au Jeffery Hale, situé à cette époque sur le boulevard Saint-Cyrille (devenu le boulevard René-Lévesque), en face du Grand Théâtre actuel.

L'avion de Lindberg atterrit sur les plaines d'Abraham vers 18h45, le mardi 24 avril. En mettant pied à terre, l'aviateur américain se fit conduire avec son sérum auprès de Bennett.

Devant participer à l'expédition de l'amiral Byrd vers le pôle Sud, Bennett voulut, en dépit de son état de santé, se joindre au groupe d'Américains et de Canadiens qui tentaient de se porter au secours de deux aviateurs allemands et d'un Irlandais, à bord du Bremen, qui avait dû atterrir d'urgence sur l'île Greenly, dans le détroit de Belle-Isle.

Bennett était au Lac Sainte-Agnès, dans Charlevoix, lorsqu'il développa une pneumonie. Transporté d'urgence à Québec, on fit le nécessaire pour le sauver, mais en vain. L'aviateur décédait, le matin du mercredi 25 avril à 10h40. Vers 11h, Lindberg prenait son envol pour un retour aux États-Unis, où il apprit en arrivant que son ami était décédé.

Il aura fallu un échec du Bremen ainsi que la maladie grave de Floyd Bennett pour que la ville de Québec soit honorée par une très brève visite du grand As de l'aviation américaine. L'année précédente, Charles Lindberg avait réalisé son exploit de faire le trajet New York-Paris, sans escale, en 33 heures, en solitaire à bord du Spirit of St. Louis. » – René Bureau
