[edit]DescriptionCharles II with the Royal Oak c.1660 367307-1362489560.jpg |
English: Charles II with the Royal Oak c.1660. An engraving of Charles II as king. Bust length with plain cravat, portrait within the Royal Oak surrounded by three crowns. Below, four parliamentary soldiers search for the King while an army marches in the background. With English verses below. Borders trimmed. First state, for third state see RCIN 602672. This print is lettered throughout. Along the bottom: "Dodona's Fable, Truth, my Story made / My Glories well obscured in that Shade … // All was a Miracle and Heav'n would Have / A Paralell the Tree again should SAVE / September the 6:th 1651. I: H:"; in the lower left: "P: Stent Excudit. The print alludes to the story of Charles hiding in an oak tree after his defeat at the battle of Worcester in 1651." The print formed part of an album of British royal portrait prints assembled by Cassiano and his younger brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo in Rome. Described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III's library as Kings of England and their Families from Henry VII to James II, the album was arranged chronologically, with kings and their consorts together. It was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and its prints incorporated into the series of Engraved Royal Portraits (organised dynastically). Provenance: From the collection of Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-22 October 1657); inherited by his brother, Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo (1606-1689); sold by Carlo Antonio's grandson to Clement XI, 1703; acquired by Cardinal Alessandro Albani by 1714, from whom the collection was purchased by George III in 1762 |
