Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Charles F. Boine House, 2475 Niagara Street at Riverside Avenue, Buffalo, New York, November 2021. Built in 1919, this palatial residence is perched on a bluff with a sweeping view over the Niagara River in the aptly named Riverside section of the city. With its scrupulously symmetrical façade, side-gabled roof (pierced by pedimented dormers on the main façade and with Palladian windows beneath it on the lateral elevations), and subtle Classical detailing (most in evidence on the entrance portico, framed by a handsome pair of Doric pilasters and with a pediment carved in a sunburst pattern) is emblematic of the then-popular Colonial Revival school of architecture. Charles Floyd Boine (1875-1960) was a prominent local attorney and politico who served on the 21st Ward Democratic Committee and as Erie County transfer tax attorney, and was an instrumental factor in the career of former New York governor and U.S. presidential candidate Alfred E. Smith. He lived in the house until his death.
