ROCHESTER CASTLE. Showing Graveyard in the remains of Castle Moat. Here Charles Dickenswished to be buried. (The following essay was, most of it, written in August andSeptember, 1879, ^^^ ^^^^ read before the ManchesterLiterary Club, on the evening of the i6th February, 1880.The drawings were made in August, 1879.) CHARLES DICKENS AND ROCHESTER (Reprinted with Additions from the Papers of the ManchesterLiterary Club. Volume VL 1880.) Writing to the Hon. Mrs. Watson in 1856, Charles Dickenssays:— I have always observed within my experience that the men whohave left home young have, many long years afterwards, had the tenderestlove for it. Thats a pleasant thing to think of, as one of the wiseadjustments of this life of ours.
Text Appearing After Image:
ROCHESTER CATHEDRAL AND CASTLE FROM STROOD. CHARLES DICKENS AND ROCHESTER BY ROBERT LANGTON. has no doubt been observed by all carefulreaders of the works of Charles Dickenshow very frequently in his earliest andhis latest books he introduces the city ofRochester as the scene of portions of hisstories. I now propose to bring together suchreferences to this locality as are to befound in the entire works of Dickens, andwhere possible, to let the great master himself do the descriptivepart in his own language. In adding some explanatory notes of my own, I may say that, having passed perhaps the most impressionable part of my child-hood at a school in Rochester, and having been familiar with theneighbourhood all through my life, I am able to testify to thewonderful accuracy and realism of the many sketches of life andscene in that part of Kent, which are to be found in some of theworks of Charles Dickens.
