English: The Charles D. Arnold House, 123 Bidwell Parkway, Buffalo, New York, March 2022. Erected in 1895, the Arnold House is notable as the final Buffalo commission of architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee, who returned to Buffalo to supervise construction nine years after the dissolution of his partnership with James H. Marling. Here, Silsbee largely dispenses with his favored Shingle style in favor of the then-obscure-but-soon-to-be-prominent Tudor Revival, as evidenced here by the steep pitch of the hipped roof (note also the copper finials flanking the ridge and crowning the gables above the dormers), the half-timbering on the second floor of the façade, and a front entrance that's downplayed in prominence, set off center behind a non-original yet complimentary full-width front porch. A more traditional Silsbee feature is the corner tower: tucked well behind the façade on the west side elevation, it's faced in brick, topped consecutively with an engaged conical roof and yet another copper finial, and unfortunately not visible from this angle. The house was built for noted photographer Charles D. Arnold (1844-1927), who first gained fame among architectural circles for the images of the splendid landmarks of Europe that he captured on tour as a young man, and at the time he moved in had just completed an assignment as the official photographer of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. He would go on to serve the same role in Buffalo's Pan-American Exposition of 1901 and the Jamestown Exposition of 1907 in Norfolk, Virginia. Arnold and his wife lived in the house until 1916.
