Description
English: Portrait by Robert Duddingstone Herdman, of Charles Wallace Alexander Napier Cochrane-Baillie, 2nd Baron Lamington G.C.M.G. (1860-1940), Governor of Queensland (1896-1901), Governor of Bombay (1903-1907), Conservative MP for St Pancras North, depicted in semi profile in brown jacket and red tie. Inscribed and titled on label, on the back. Oil on canvas, in decorative gilt frame. Title lower left: "Wallace, 2nd Baron Lamington". Signed with initials, dated 1895. The work is accompanied by the original receipt, with envelope, for 42 pounds, made out by the artist to Lord Lamington's mother, Lady Lamington, who presumably commissioned the painting. The envelope is annotated and the receipt is dated 2 March 1895. A facsimile of the receipt is attached to the back of the painting. The original is separately housed.

Robert Duddingstone Herdman, A.R.S.A., S.S.A., portrait and genre painter, was born in Edinburgh in 1863. He studied art at the R.S.A. Schools and in Paris. He exhibited at the principal London galleries from 1888, and in Paris, Munich and Vienna, but chiefly in Scotland. He was elected A.R.S.A. in 1908. He lived in Edinburgh for many years.
