Hampton, Va., April 9, 1890
Miss Alice Longfellow.
Dear friend,--
My dear teacher asked me to write to you, several weeks ago, but I did not have chance to finished [sic] the letter. Now this evening my teacher ask me again to write. So I am very willing to do so, and I would like to tell you where I have been school before, I have have [sic] been school in Indian Territory and it is called Chilocco Indian School. I have been school their [sic] three years, at first year I was in second reader, arithmetic, addition, Small Geography, United States History. First year I went to school at Chilocco the Supt. was Dr. Menthorn he was very good man indeed, the school was alright when he was there and school hat [sic] many cattles too, also farm was many acres.
Now the next Supt. was Mr. Brandom he is minister, and was very good man too, but he did not make no improvement taking care of the school and crops.
Now the third Supt. was Mr. Bradford he was minister too, and was very good man, very kind to the childrens, but he was sickly always. I heard that he had the consumption, he was nearly die in that School. Soon he got better he went to State Florida where sun gives more heat. Soon he got well he [p. 2] came back to his business, but still consumption remain, but he was very good man and noble.
Now the last Supt. when I was their [sic] is Geo. W. Scott, he was very good man also, he like the children and children likes him too.
He is the man so anxious to let us boys come to this Institute, and willing to let us boys have new uniforms Suits, we were very to get [sic] them indeed.
Only four us boys came from that school, I guess you wish to know their names, and what tribe each belongs.
Peter Bourassa, in one he was in A Junior class in this Institute, but he went home because his father is dead, and there was his mother alone so he had to go home and take care his property and cattles, he is Pottawatomie from I.T. Jonnie Block, is here, he is in A Junior too, he is Cheyenne, from I. T. William Burgess is here he is in Addvance [sic] class, he is Otoc boy from I.T.
Charles C. Washington is in Addvance [sic] Class, Otoc Indian Territory, this boy is very anxious to write to you. I like this school very much, I see we can learn more than Indian Territory Schools.
This is all I can think.
I thank you for your kindness to the Indians. From your respectfully, Charles C. ---- Washington.
