English: The painting depicts a plantation scene of Cairnhill, Singapore during its time as a British Settlement. With rolling hills, shrubs, and scattered trees across a vast estate, a driveway leads to the country house, a feature commonly associated with the British countryside, the painting rather reminiscent of Britain's rural landscapes. Dyce faithfully paints the foliage of the tropics, which frames the country house, suggesting a geography that is rather different from what his intended audience in Britain would be familiar with. This image could be seen as a means of celebrating colonial industry and knowledge as a productive and transformative force.
