| Description |
English: Charing Cross Station entrance and Hotel, 1983. View SE across the Strand. Dominating the scene is the 1865-replica, designed by E.M. Barry, of the 'Eleanoar Cross' famously erected at the order of King Edward I in 1294 in memory of his wife, destroyed by Parliament in 1647. The Station and Hotel have been radically altered since 1990. On the right is the entrance to the Charing Cross Underground Station, which until 1/5/79 had been named 'Strand' on the Northern Line Charing Cross Loop and on that date also the adjacent Bakerloo Line 'Trafalgar Square' station was incorporated together with pedestrian interchange. This 'Charing Cross' station was also the terminus of the new Jubilee Line, but from 20/11/99 was by-passed by the Jubilee Line Extension from Green Park to Stratford. |
