Thesewere the days of the marble top table with goldlegs, the pier glasses, plush furniture, bead work,wax flowers, Picturesque America, rosewood fur-niture with little legs and big backs liberally carvedin every available spot with flowers and fruit. Eastand West were alike offenders, but nowhere in theworld was there so much transgression of the prin-ciples governing beauty and harmony as on thePacific Coast, where the splendid examples of artis-tic Spanish work should have prevented any suchdeparture. Then followed a reaction, slowly and steadilythe museums and art schools, the efforts and exampleof great architects and true decorators, educated anddirected those who really desired good things, anda new era began. The study of books and the blindfollowing of individual masters stopped, and a newknowledge and understanding of color harmony andarrangement in interior work was conceived. Mr. Louis C.
