During the reigns of Louis XIV, XV, andXVI in France, the prevailing impression given bythe interior decorations and furnishings were thoseof delicacy and harmony. The Italian School inthis period is also full of subtle suggestion, but ithas remained for England and more recentlyAmerica, to develop styles which may be said to bethe embodiment of dignity and grace. The evolution of taste during the past hundredand fifty years has been marvelous. In this periodthe Adam brothers, Sheraton, Hepplewhite, andChippendale, fathered the styles which bear theirnames, and which show marked consistency in line,

Later came the desire for something new, andfor eighty years or more the iniquities that werecommitted in the names of architecture and interiordecoration were so numerous that nothing escaped.In this country and in England every canon of goodtaste was violated, and every lesson that was learnedduring the preceeding periods was forgotten. Thesewere the days of the marble top table with goldlegs, the pier glasses, plush furniture, bead work,wax flowers, Picturesque America, rosewood fur-niture with little legs and big backs liberally carvedin every available spot with flowers and fruit.
