Title |
Charabanc passengers and onlookers outside the State Tourist Bureau |
|||
Description |
The State Tourist Bureau purchased this motor charabanc in 1913 to take tourists on trips through the Adelaide Hills. The Bureau's earlier charabancs had proved immensely popular with locals and vistors alike, summer and winter. This charabanc, which was especially made for the Tourist Bureau and drew crowds at a motor show, carried 25 passengers. It was described as 'exceedingly neat in appearance' and painted 'French grey' (Mail, 8 March 1913, p4). The Critic carried a lengthy description (Critic, 19 March 1913, p26). As very few people owned a car, the charabanc provided their first experience of motoring. The Bureau purchased a number of charabancs over the next twenty years, which took passengers to the beach and popular tourist spots such as Granite Island. |
