that he could not accept the view held by his Baptistfriends of the Sacrament of Baptism. His remarks on the two sacraments were exceedinglyinteresting. He said: Here again I am struck by theextreme moderation of the Lambeth requirements—baptismand the Supper of our Lord, administered with unfailing useof Christs words of institution and the elements ordained byHim. Can any of us object to that? You see there is notone word about infant baptism; there is not one word aboutany particular doctrine of the sacraments. It is simply the factput before you that Christ did appoint those two sacraments—baptism with water, and baptism in the name of the Father,and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; and the LordsSupper as instituted by Himself and administered with theelements of bread and wine. THE WETTERHORN and the Parish Church, Grindelwald, in which theReunion Conferences of 1892, &c., were held Appendix B 363 the terms of the statement; why then should we make it astumbling-block that the Church of England has put forwarda statement in her Catechism (not in her Articles) whichseems to imply a particular belief in a particular doctrine ofthe Sacraments ? Even if it were so, still she does not requireit of the Nonconformist Churches. But besides this you have a large section of the Churchof England (I should say quite one half though not thenoisiest half or the dominant half, but at least as honest andtrue as the other half) which does put on the documents ofthe Church of England a construction very different fromthat which is put upon them by High Churchmen, whichdoes hold a doctrine of the Sacraments not materially differ-ing from that which is held by the great majority of Noncon-formists.
