Summary

Description	Neak Pean est constitué d'un ensemble de bassins (baray) disposés en forme de croix avec au centre une tour sanctuaire (les Naga enroulés). Il est dans l'axe du temple Preah Khan.Il mesure 3500 m sur 900. Construit sous Jayavarman VII, il date de la fin du XIIème siècle. Chaque bassin extérieur est relié au bassin central par une chapelle d'ablutions dont les gargouilles sont en forme de tête humaine, de tête de cheval, de tête d'éléphant, de tête de lion. Dans le grand bassin, se dresse le cheval volant Bâlaha, une métamorphose du Bodhisattva-Lokeshvara pour sauver les "naufragés de l'île habitée par les ogresses". La représentation symbolique de cet ensemble monumental pourrait être le lac bouddhique Anavatapta de l'Hymalaya, aux eaux guérisseuses, où se baignaient les Bouddha et les Arhat. Le centre serait la source des quatre grands fleuves de l'Inde représentés par les quatre petits bassins.
