[edit]DescriptionChapel Gate - Arlington National Cemetery - 2011.JPG |
English: Looking west at the rear of the Fort Myer Gate at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States. Members of the public may not pass the gate either way through the gate without a military pass. U.S. Department of Defense military and civilian personnel may pass through the gate, but must show official I.D.
The 30-foot-wide gate consists of two square brick columns topped by concrete capitals. Working electric lanterns sit atop each column. Painted wrought iron fences close the gates. These may be opened and closed electronically. A small brick guardhouse is on the south side of the gate. The gate is one of four gates on the western edge of the cemetery which lead into adjacent Fort Myer. Meigs Avenue, a paved roadway within the cemetery, leads up to the gate from the east. Fort Myer was originally named Fort Whipple, and the gate's first name was the "Fort Whipple Gate." It is also known as the Chapel Gate, because the Fort Myer Old Chapel is just beyond it on the grounds of Fort Myer. Many of the funeral processions at the cemetery begin at the Old Fort Myer Post Chapel. From 1892 to the late 1930s, the Washington, Alexandria, and Mount Vernon Railway operated its "Nauck line" (also known as the "Fort Myer line") along the cemetery's western edge. The "Arlington Fort Myer" station was located at the Fort Myer Gate on the grounds of Fort Myer. |
