The floor plan of a Pallava era Jain temple in Kanchi

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is an SVG format plan and architectural drawing of a Jain temple.
  • Kanchipuram is a major temple town in Tamil Nadu. It is a historic city with some of earliest known monasteries and schools in India attached to many Hindu and two Jain temples.
  • Above is the floor plan of Chandraprabhu temple dedicated to the 8th Tirthankara Chandraprabha. The original temple is from the Pallava period, but one repaired and modified over the centuries. The floor plan above is original. An 11th century epigraph confirms its existence and gifts it received from a Hindu king of the Chola period.
  • The temple follows the square and circle principle found in historic Sanskrit texts.
  • This relative scale and relative dimensions in this architectural drawing are close to the actual temple. The plan illustrates the design and layout, but some intricate details are not shown for clarity. It shows close approximations and rounding, where exact measurements were not feasible.
