Summary
[edit]DescriptionChand Baori, Abhaneri 13 stories.jpg |
English: Chand Baori stepwell – Abhaneri is located on the NH-11 or Jaipur-Agra highway situated at the distance of 95km from Jaipur. Abhaneri was originally named Abha Nagri, which means "city of brightness," but over the centuries the name changed because of the way it was pronounced . Chand Baori consists of 3,500 narrow steps over 13 stories. It extends approximately 30 m (100 ft) into the ground making it one of the deepest and largest stepwells in India. The architecture of structure is grand and there is abundance of delicate and intricate carvings.
The Chand Baori is the most attractive landmarks in Rajasthan and It was built by King Chanda of the Nikumbh dynasty between 800 CE and 900 CE. The same was dedicated to Hashat Mata, Goddess of Joy and Happiness upon completion. Since the state of Rajasthan is extremely arid, the design and final structure of Chand Baori was intended to conserve as much water as possible. At the bottom of the well, the air remains 5-6 degrees cooler than at the surface. Chand Baori was used as a community gathering place for locals during periods of intense heat. The side of the well has a pavilion and rooms which served as resting place for the royals The structure is now maintained by the ASI and it has help put the site on the tourist map again. |
