Description
English: 15th century, restored by a Belgian refugee during the First World War; it shows St Edmund's head guarded by a wolf. According to legend, in 870 St Edmund was beheaded by Danes who then hid his head in thick brambles, preventing its being buried with his body. But a wolf came and stood guard over the head, protecting it from other animals until people found it and reunited it with the body.
