Summary
[edit]DescriptionChancel ceiling, All Saints' church, Haslingfield - geograph.org.uk - 713762.jpg |
English: Chancel ceiling, All Saints' church, Haslingfield. The ceiling is decorated with the symbols used in a "Clog Almanack". This was a pictorial calendar of saints' days used by (probably illiterate) workers, which was carved on a square piece of boxwood as shown here in the lower left panel.
The calendar reads right to left from there in the lower row: St Mary Magdalene (Jul 22) - a jug of oil, she went to anoint Christ's body in the tomb St James (Jul 25) - a pilgrim's hat and staff Transfiguration of Christ (Aug 6) - the Cross St Bartholomew (Aug 24) - possibly the sticks with which he was flayed alive Left to right in the row above: St Simon & St Jude (Oct 28) - their instruments of martyrdom, a saw and a halberd St Andrew (Nov 30) - St Andrew's cross St Thomas (Dec 21) - an arrow St Stephen (Dec 26) - stones - ending the run of martyrdom symbols St John the Evangelist (Dec 27) - quill pens for writing The symbols on the ceiling are only Victorian, but Clog Almanacks were very ancient. See http://www.thebookofdays.com/misc/primitive_almanacs.htm . The Almanack theme is very appropriate to the church's dedication to All Saints. More symbols on 713796 |
