Summary

[edit]
Description
English: he 978-metre bridge across the Bharatapuzha connects the Ponnani and Tirur taluks.

The 7.5-metre-wide bridge-cum-regulator has 70 shutters. The project is expected to irrigate 4,344 hectares in the two taluks. ................. "It is the largest regulator-cum-bridge in the state" ..................

It will provide water to nine lift-irrigation schemes in the region. The project has made available 63.5 mld of drinking water in the region, sources said.

The road distance between Kochi and Kozhikode stands reduced by 40 km, between Ponnani and Tirur by 20 km, and between Ponnani and Malappuram by 10 km. V.P. Sulabha, District Information Officer, said the project would bring about a boom in religious tourism by bringing more people to places like the Ayyappa Temple, Chamravattom; Nava Mukunda Temple, Tirunavaya; Bhagavati Temple, Vairankode; Siva Temple, Thriprangode; Hanuman Temple, Alathiyur; Garudan Kavu; Thunchanparamba, Tirur; Juma Masjid and Maqdoom Shrine at Ponnani; Umer Qasi Shrine at Veliyamkode; and Beevi Shrine at Puthuponnani.

It took nearly 50 years for the project to materialise after it was conceived.
