nder the fostering care of a benevolent gentleman(Mr Alston), a number of books in Roman capitals has beenprinted for the use of the asylum for the blind in Glasgow, aswell as for general sale; and we believe they have been verygenerally acceptable. In this literature for the blind is the entireBible, several works of piety, and some volumes of elementaryscience and general knowledge. On this plan of raised figuressusceptible to the touch, maps and globes for teaching geographyhave been formed for the use of the blind, and are now intro-duced into all well-conducted asylums. It need scarcely beadded, that by means of the literature and other apparatus wemention, the blind are now in most instances instructed in themore familiar branches of learnings; and with the industrialexercises which they acquire, they enjoy a position in societyand scale of intelligence very different from that which wasoccupied by their less fortunate predecessors. 32 SIR STAMFORD RAFFLES AND THE SPICE ISLANDS.

Carrying our eyeacross the Indian Ocean,we observe that off thesouthern point of Malayathere are numerous islandsof larger and smaller dimen-the sea for hundreds of miles is studded with them, and group after group stretches across the ocean almost to the northern shores of Australia.
