Title
Chalgrove: Thimble
Description
English: A copper alloy thimble with punched dot decoration. The peak of the thimble is domed and has three concentric rings of punched decoration, while the thimble body has eight rings of the same style. The remains of an incised line can be seen beneath these concentric. The thimble body widens towards the base where the rim is damaged.

Although the thinness of the thimble walls suggests that this may be a stamped rather than cast thimble, they are difficult to tell apart. There is a small notch on the rim which may have been designed to hold the thimble in place while being finished on a lathe (Holmes nd:1). This example was probably used for fine embroidery.

The thimble measures 15.24mm long and 17.23 maximum diameter: it weighs 4gms.
