Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sulfidic hydrothermal vein rock (copper ore) from the Tertiary of Colorado, USA. (8.3 cm across)

This sample of copper ore is a polymineralic hydrothermal vein that has intruded volcanic rocks of southwestern Colorado's San Juan Volcanic Field. The brassy gold area at center is chalcopyrite (CuFeS - copper iron sulfide). The mottled dark brassy & gray area at right is mixed pyrite-tetrahedrite (FeS2 - iron sulfide and Cu12Sb4S13 - copper antimony sulfide). The whitish-gray material at left is quartz (SiO2 - silica). The small brown masses mixed with the quartz are siderite (FeCO3 - iron carbonate).
