Notes | 'Cabinet-Maker and Chair-Maker' Giles Grendey, was described in 1740 as 'A great Dealer in the Cabinet Way'. He was appointed Upper Warden of the Joiner's Company in 1747 and its Master in 1766. Grendey’s upholstered chair shows the capability of the new ‘metallic strength’ of imported mahogany to create daring carving on chairs and develop the detail of the feet. The combination of the richly detailed foliage decoration on the knees end with the scrolling whorl feet and the cresting rail at the top of the back make this an unusual example from the period. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
