Description |
English: Giltwood armchair with pale gold brocade upholstery on back, seat and elbow arm and rests, edged with gold band. "as an architect, interior decorator and furniture designer Robert Adam adopted the principles and decorative imagery of Neo-Classicism, a style which pervaded European taste during the latter half of the 18th century. Using Greek and Roman architectural ornament, the style included the use of the acanthus leaf and patera (small oval motif) seen in the carved decoration of this chair." |

Notes | The so-called French Adam chair, which closely followed French models, appeared in the 1770s. Under Adams influence chairs became lighter and more graceful. They featured spiral twisted turning on tapered legs and delicate carved, inlaid and painted classical motifs. The gracefully outlined back brought back into favour the round and oval back and in some versions cane seats. Adams also used beautiful materials like brocades and tapestries to upholster the chairs. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
