Notes The so-called French Adam chair, which closely followed French models, appeared in the 1770s. Under Adams influence chairs became lighter and more graceful. They featured spiral twisted turning on tapered legs and delicate carved, inlaid and painted classical motifs. The gracefully outlined back brought back into favour the round and oval back and in some versions cane seats. Adams also used beautiful materials like brocades and tapestries to upholster the chairs.
