Description
English: Chair, side, pair oak, with ebony inlays, brass feet, contemporary dark green leather "modern upholstery, dyed to correspond with that on a set of Gothic Revival chairs circa 1875 designed by Pugin contemporary G E Street (Blairman's note)" Many of Pugin's designs and patterns for interiors furnishings were inspired by 14th and 15th century examples he studied and recorded in England and France. Motifs such as the quatrefoil and the fleur-de-lys are common, as are plant forms. They share similar characteristics – repetition and symmetry, crisp contours and flat shapes. In furniture design Pugin uses simple curved timbers, beams and arches. This chair was designed by his son, simple in shape and construction looks strong with only a little embellishment in the carved rebating and nailed edging to the seat upholstery.

Notes This chair was designed by Gothic Revival advocate A W N Pugin’s son, Edward. They share similar characteristics- repetition and symmetry, crisp contours and flat shapes. Both use straightforward curved timbers, beams and arches. The simple shape and obvious construction methods enhance the appearance of strength. The decoration is restricted to the carved rebating and nailed edging to the seat upholstery.
