Summary
[edit]DescriptionChain Home Radar Chelmsford (54006498696).jpg |
English: Developed for the Air Ministry between 1937-39, Chain Home Radar was an early fixed-position radar station network around the coast of Britain which proved invaluable during WW2 for the detection of enemy aircraft. A typical installation used four towers like this in line abreast for transmission and four smaller wooden towers for receiving the reflected system. Each transmitter tower is 360 feet tall. The Chain Hone system with refinements could detect aircraft altitude, range and approximate numbers at a range of 120 miles, giving British fighter pilots time to get airborne and formate prior to attacking the German bombers.
The Chain Home transmitter master at Chelmsford is the only original, complete mast left, although parts of four others survive, notably at Stenigot in Lincolnshire. It originally stood at RAF Canewdon in Essex and was moved to Great Baddow in 1956. This is the only surviving Chain Home tower still in its original, unmodified form with cantilever platforms at 50 ft, 200 ft and 360 ft, and in 2019 was given Grade II listed status |
