Château-Larcher (Vienne) La lanterne des morts. Au milieu du cimetière, cette lanterne des morts date de la première moitié du XIIIe siècle. L'ouverture rectangulaire du bas permettait d'introduire la lanterne que l'on faisait monter dans le fanal par un système de corde et poulie. Le seul témoignage écrit évoquant ce genre de construction qui nous soit parvenu, est un passage du De miraculis de Pierre le Vénérable*: Vers 1150, la veille de la Noël, au prieuré clunisien de Charlieu dans la Loire. Un jeune oblat* voit apparaître son oncle Achard, mort depuis quelques années, qui l’invite à le suivre pour contempler des choses merveilleuses. De fait, après avoir quitté le dortoir et traversé cloître majeur et cloître des malades, ils arrivent au cimetière. Là, dans une clarté indéfinissable, l’enfant voit une foule innombrable d’hommes vêtus de l’habit monastique, assis sur des sièges. La scène se poursuit avec la description d’une lanterne des morts : Il y a, au centre du cimetière, une construction en pierre, au sommet de laquelle se trouve une place qui peut recevoir une lampe, dont la lumière éclaire toutes les nuits ce lieu sacré, en signe de respect pour les fidèles qui y reposent. Il y a aussi quelques marches par lesquelles on accède à une plate-forme dont l’espace est suffisant pour deux ou trois hommes assis ou debout. (Obtinet autem medium coemeterii locum, structura quaedam lapidea, habens in summitate sui quantitatem unius lampadis capacem, quae ob reverentiam fidelium ibi quiescentium totis noctibus fulgore suo locum illum sacratum illustrat. Sunt et gradus per quos illuc ascenditur, supraque spatium duobus vel tribus ad standum vel sedendum hominibus sufficiens.)
