Summary
[edit]DescriptionCf34536 626-C55000 172 Dyrehodestolpen Løvehodet fra Oseberg. Konservator Maria Jensen(photo Mårten Teigen, Kunsthistorisk Museum UiO, Oslo, Norway CC BY-SA 4.0) cropped.jpg |
English: Five unique Viking Age wooden posts with carved animal heads were discovered in a burial mound near Tønsberg (100 km southwest of Oslo, Norway) in 1904. The find consisted of a Viking ship (the Oseberg Ship), numerous wooden and metal artefacts, textiles and even sacrificed animals used as offerings to the two buried women. The animal-head posts are elaborately decorated with animal heads and patterns with gripping beasts in the Oseberg Style, an early style of Norse art. Four of the posts are on exhibition at The Viking Ship Museum ("Vikingskipshuset på Bygdøy") in Oslo.
The photo is a detail from a photo copied from the collections of The Museum of Cultural History in Oslo. The photo shows restoration/conservation of the animal-head post "Løvehodet" ("Lion's head") in 914.

3 (utgitt 1920). |
