| Description | These two commercial buildings on Central Avenue in Cincinnati’s West End are all that remain of what was once a tightly-packed block that largely consisted of a Row of warehouses and commercial storefronts that faced the old Miami and Erie Canal in the upper West End, demolished for the realignment and widening of Linn Street in the early 1960s, along with an urban renewal scheme meant to open up the area to redevelopment for industrial and commercial purposes. Constructed in the late 19th Century, these two buildings were built in the Italianate style with ornate features, including heavily ornamented cornices and window headers. Though they are the last two of their kind in this area of the West End, these buildings are neglected and appear to be vacant, despite their highly visible location just across from Mohawk Place along Central Parkway. As revitalization continues in nearby Over-the-Rhine and along Dayton Street, I expect these buildings to get caught by the current and renovated, with infill likely to be constructed around them. If the abandoned Cincinnati Subway ever sees use in the future, these buildings are located adjacent to one of the stations for it. |
