then owned the electric railway inthat city, the proposition of joining their interestsand building a line from Muncie, via Anderson,to Indianapolis. Fortunate, indeed, for the future of electricrailways in Indiana, there came to Indiana onNew Years Day, 1899, Mr. Hugh J. McGowan.Coming as the representative of the Dolan-Mor-gan Syndicate, which had recently purchased theIndianapolis street railways, he at once com-menced the development of that system, andsoon made it the best city railway system in thecountry. To Mr. McGowan, Mr. Henry presentedthe interurban project then under consideration,and later, through his introduction, Messrs.Henry and McCullough took up the matter withMr. Randal Morgan of Philadelphia, who agreedto join with them in the organization of theUnion Traction Company of Indiana, a con-solidated company, which would embrace theelectric lines in the cities of Muncie, Marion,Anderson and Elwood, and interurban lines con-necting, and including the proposed line from

The finalorganization of this consolidated company wascompleted in June, 1899, and work was at oncecommenced on the construction of the Muncie-Indianapolis line. On January 4, 1901, the linewas completed and its first car ran into the cityof Indianapolis. In the meantime the line from Alexandria toElwood had been completed and the system asplanned in 1893, was at last a reality, just threeyears and three days from the time the first carran from Anderson to Alexandria. Looking forward to the completion of the lineinto Indianapolis, as early as 1894, Mr. Henrytook up the subject of a contract with the localcompany for running cars into this city, and inFebruary, 1895, secured a contract with the Citi-zens Street Railway Company, then controlledby what was known as the McKee & VernerSyndicate of Pittsburg.
