Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The imposing stone gates of White Chapel Memorial Park open onto the corner of Niagara Falls Boulevard and Tonawanda Creek Road in the far northwest corner of the town of Amherst, New York, as seen on a November 2021 afternoon. The cemetery was founded in 1934 on 108 acres of land adjacent to the Erie Canal in North Amherst, and is significant as the first local example - and, indeed, one of the earliest examples anywhere - of what is known as a memorial park. Innovated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin just four years earlier, here the meticulously landscaped, parklike ambience of the rural cemetery model is further enhanced through a policy that minimizes built structures within the cemetery grounds and proscribes upright monuments in favor of flat markers that are flush to the ground. Notable as well was the cemetery's strictly nonsectarian nature, welcoming burials of people from all faiths at a time when it was unusual to do so.
