Au Moyen Âge, l'utilisation des tavaillons* était très courante et constituait, avec le chaume, l'essentiel des couvertures. C'est un type de couverture durable et esthétique. Les travaux de rénovations permettent régulièrement de trouver des bardeaux chêne ou châtaigner du XVIIIème siècle. Le châtaigner dure généralement de 60 à 120 ans. Tavaillon ou tavillon : tuile de bois. La couverturte en tavaillons était répandue dans leJura, les Alpes, les Pyrénées, la Creuse...
