Summary
[edit]DescriptionCattal Signal box - geograph.org.uk - 1586765.jpg |
English: Cattal Signal box Tyers Electric Token. These used to be widespread of the network of single line railways, but relatively few remain in use. The purpose is to ensure that there is only one train on the section of single line at any time. There is one of these instruments at each end of a single track section of railway. A tablet can only be removed from the machine if the line is clear. It forms the authority to the driver of a train to proceed into the single line section. The driver will then hand it to the signal man at the far end of the section who will replace it in his machine. Until this is done, another tablet cannot be extracted from either end. The system is simple to operate and has proved over the years to be extremely effective.
NB: the signal box opens onto the platform so it was possible to take this view through the open door. |
