Description
English: Juliana Makuwahine, as she appeared on the 25th, June 1839 when lashed to the tree, for the unpardonable crime of believing in the Church of Rome. One of four crude woodcuts, which have been attributed to Jules Dudoit. Showing Catholic persecution in Hawaii. Supplement to the Sandwich Islands Mirror containing an Account of the Persecution of Catholics at the Sandwich Islands ... January 15, 1840. Honolulu: R. J. Howard, Printer, [1840]. 3 woodcut plates. 100 pp. 8vo (230 x 132 mm). Period speckled wrappers. Foxing (heavy at ends), lacking 1st woodcut, wrappers frayed with backstrip lacking.
