Summary
[edit]DescriptionCatholic Academy of West Buffalo - fmr Cathedral School - Buffalo, New York - 20200827.jpg |
English: Catholic Academy of West Buffalo, 1069 Delaware Avenue (as seen from the east end of Lexington Avenue), Buffalo, New York, August 2020. Once the parochial school connected to the adjacent St. Joseph's New Cathedral, it was erected in 1955 on a site that previously had been home to the convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph (and, earlier still, the home of local attorney and onetime U.S. Postmaster General Wilson S. Bissell, who served during the second presidential term of his former law partner, Grover Cleveland). The building's Italian Renaissance architecture belies its mid-20th century vintage: witness the entrance pavilion with its low-pitched hip roof and front entrance crowned by a handsome segmental pediment, as well as the rustication on the lateral wings that comes in the form of stone quoins and round arches bedecking the façade. The erstwhile Cathedral School continued to be operated by the local Catholic diocese even after the 1976 demolition of the cathedral itself; it's now known as the Catholic Academy of West Buffalo and counts an enrollment of 172 students representing all faiths. |
