royal prerogative; how the miserable culprit, tied to the tailof a horse, was dragged through the streets of Lincoln, and hanged on Can wickHill, given over both in body and soul to the prince of the power of the air;and how, finally, near upon a hundred Jews inculpated by him were carted offto the Tower of London and hanged, and their property confiscated. Few subjectshave been more popular in ballad literature than this tale of St. Hugh of Lincoln,the Jews daughter being usually made to play the part of the nmrderess. The choir is furnished with three tiers of seats, the upper row of prebendalstalls being surmounted by lofty tabernacle work of consummate richness, whosevacant niches have been recently filled with statuettes of the saints of the AnglicanKalendar. These stalls, as well as the regal statues over the west door, and thevaulted ceilings of the three towers, are due to John of Welbourn, treasurerof the church towards the close of the fourteenth century. The miserere of a stall on the tier belowshows the body of the butter-stealer borne by his hang-men to burial. This curious scries may probably illustratesome once popular but now forgotten satirical poem. No words can do justice to the consummate beautyof the Angel Choir, which, in the combination ofrichness and delicacy of ornament and unstinting pro-fuseness of sculpture, leaving scarcely a square foot ofplain wall anywhere, knows no rival.
