Lithograph from 'The Officers Portfolio of the Striking Reminiscences of the War', a collection of 20 coloured lithographs 'From Drawings, Photographs, and Notes, Taken on the Spot, Made into Complete Pictures by Eminent Artists', published by Dickinson Brothers, London, 1856 (c).

A British sentry stands outside the cemetery at Cathcart's Hill during the Crimean War (1854-1856). Sir George Cathcart (1794-1854), a veteran of the Waterloo campaign of 1815, was given command of the 4th Division in the Crimea. On 5 November 1854 he was killed in action during the Battle of Inkerman, leading the 1st Brigade in an assault on a Russian position.
