Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Caterpillar of Elephant Hawk-moth (Deilephila elpenor). When alarmed, this caterpillar can retract its head into its body, causing that end of its body to swell up; this causes two pairs of false eyes that are located there to expand (for an example, see 541543). It then waves its front end around in a display that is intended to frighten predators.

The caterpillar is seen here in its normal state, with its head extended (the head end is to the right in this photo); two of the false eyes are also visible in the photo.

The caterpillar of this species is fairly large: it can be up to 9cm long. It is usually brown (as shown here), but green forms also occur.

This caterpillar was travelling along the grass, close to the footpath that crosses Cameron Muir.
