Description

Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs (Avinyonet del Penedès).

L´església del que fou priorat benedictí de Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs, que actualment és parròquia d´aquest poble, romànica d´origen, era en ruïna el 1388 i aleshores fou reformada la seva capçalera. Malgrat que el 1606 va ser escurçada per ponent, hom conservà l´antiga portalada romànica amb timpà esculpit, del segle XII. Unes obres de restauració, realitzades pels voltants de l´any 1965, redescobriren la fàbrica romànica i posaren al descobert al claustre restes escultòriques d´època visigòtica. El campanar, romànic, de planta quadrangular i amb finestres geminades, d´arquets de mig punt, és únic en tot el Penedès.

Bé que el topònim "els Gorgs" és esmentat des del 976, els orígens del monestir cal cercar-los en una donació que féu Ermengarda, mare de Mir Geribert, casada amb Geribert que era germà del vescomte de Barcelona perquè s´hi establissin cinc monjos; el levita Ramon féu una deixa de 5 mancusos (1030) i una altra deixa més important, 50 mancusos, la féu la comtessa Ermessenda el 1050.

El 1059 Mir Geribert uní el monestir de Sant Sebastià al de Sant Víctor de Marsella, però ja abans tenia una comunitat amb el seu abat. Convertit en priorat, rebé donacions dels fills dels fundadors, en especial la de la parròquia i la quadra de Sant Pau d´Ordal el 1095. El 1412 l´adquirí de Sant Víctor el monestir de Montserrat, i hi féu obres de consolidació els anys 1606 i 1785, però, en franca decadència monàstica, se secularitzà i convertí en parròquia abans de l´any 1820.
