first grade to observe in the kindergarten, in orderthat they may become familiar with the theory and methodsof the kindergarten and its relation to the rest of the ele-mentary school system. Seniors also secure a considerableamount of additional experience in teaching as substitutes inSalem and in other towns and cities in the vicinity of theschool. The Intekmediate Department. — Those students who arepreparing to teach in the junior high school are required tohave at least twenty weeks of practice. In the second yearof the course each is assigned to one of the grades in thetraining school for a period of ten weeks. The practice inthe senior year, for an equal period, includes teaching in theseventh and eighth grades in the training school, and in thejunior high schools of Lynn, Chelsea, and Somerville. Inthese schools the practice is carried on under the personalsupervision of the director of the training department, and theteachers and supervisory officers of the several schools.

17 The Commercial Department. — The necessary oppor-tunity for observation and practice teaching for students inthis department is afforded in approved high schools withwhich arrangements for supervision have been made. Students are required to spend one-half of the third \ear ofthe course in office work, for pay, under actual business con-ditions, in positions which have been approved by the school,and their work in these positions must be of such a character,both in quality and in variety, that it may be accepted forcredit toward the degree of the department. In accordancewith the rule of the Department of Education, this half yearof practical experience must be completed not less than oneyear prior to the end of the school course. 18 CURRICULA FOR ELEMENTARY, INTERMEDIATE, ANDCOMMERCIAL DEPARTMENTS A.
